In a major move to boost women empowerment in India, Defense Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman announced that women will be inducted into Military Police and will eventually comprise 20perent of its total strength.
Being the first women defense minister herself, N Sitharaman wants to improve the representation of women in armed forces. This is a historic decision to induct women for the first time in Personnel Below Officer Rank role in Corps of Military Police.

The role of the military police includes preventing breach of rules and regulations by soldiers, policing cantonments and army establishments, manning prisoner of war camps, maintaining movement of soldiers as well as logistics and extending aid to civil police whenever required.
Currently the Army employs 3.8percent, Navy 6percent and the AirForce employs 13percent women in their workforce.
